Nostalgia Audio Camelot In-ear Monitors Review

Introduction

I recently discovered the Nostalgia Audio brand at the CanJam Singapore show. Established in 2020 in Hong Kong, Nostalgia Audio specializes in high-end audio gear, including CIEM and UIEM IEMs and cables.

Today, we'll dive deep into the CAMELOT tribrid in-ear monitors, which feature 2 large 10mm Dynamic Drivers, 4 Balanced Armature Drivers, and 4 Electrostatic Drivers. The CAMELOT’s shell is made using 3D printing technology and incorporates a 5-way crossover design, XBS (Extreme Bass System), and SFD (Spiral Flow Device) technology. Priced at $2599 globally, let's explore the sound quality of the CAMELOT.

Design and Build Quality

The CAMELOT's shell is crafted from high-quality resin. The inner shell is black, while the faceplate features a wooden pattern design. The left shell bears the brand logo, and the right shell displays the CAMELOT logo. The build quality is top-notch and feels premium. The provided stock cable, named Avalon Cable, is made of high-purity OFC and OCC copper with a fabric coating. Nostalgia Audio also includes various high-quality eartips and a hand-crafted, circle-shaped leather case.

Comfort and Fit

Despite its thick shell, the CAMELOT is not overly large. I found it comfortable to wear using the stock eartips. However, those with smaller ears should try this IEM before making a purchase decision.

Sound Quality

I evaluated the CAMELOT using the Avalon Cable and a HiBy R4 source. From the first listen, I noticed a mature tuning that differs from typical Chi-Fi high-end brands. The CAMELOT offers a smooth, balanced, and natural sound.

Bass

The CAMELOT's bass is powerful and rumbly without being excessive. It prioritizes quality over quantity. The sub-bass is present but not overwhelming, with a slightly slower decay that lingers pleasantly. Both mid-bass and sub-bass strive to maintain balance, resulting in a well-weighted and full-bodied bass experience.

Midrange

The CAMELOT's midrange is warm and balanced. The lower mids and mids are well-balanced, with a slightly elevated upper midrange. After testing with both male and female vocals, I found no flaws. The CAMELOT delivers an emotional and warm midrange that is truly stunning.

Treble

Handled by 4 EST drivers, the treble is free from hiss or zing. It is musical, detailed, cohesive, and highly engaging. The CAMELOT provides a holographic soundstage, making you feel like you're attending a grand orchestral event. Instruments sound natural and realistic.

Soundstage & Imaging

The soundstage is holographic and wide, with pinpoint imaging. Music plays in many layers, adding depth to the listening experience.

CAMELOT with Lancelot Cable

The Lancelot Cable is a well-built cable with a fixed 4.4mm balanced audio jack. It enhances the overall sound by adding cleanliness and extra sparkle. While I was satisfied with the Avalon Cable, the Lancelot Cable adds an extra layer of purity and detail, making it a worthwhile optional upgrade.

Value and Competition

At a $2600 price point, the Nostalgia Audio Camelot competes with the 64 Audio Volur.

Nostalgia Audio Camelot vs. 64 Audio Volur

The CAMELOT features a 2DD, 4BA, and 4EST driver configuration, while the Volur has a 2DD and 8BA setup. The Volur's metal shell offers a more robust build and better aesthetics. In terms of fit and comfort, the Volur is the clear winner.

Sound-wise, the CAMELOT is warm, thick, and smooth with slow decay, while the Volur is thin, crisp, and clear with faster decay. The Volur excels in bass speed and tactility, while the CAMELOT offers a warm and smooth midrange. In the treble section, the CAMELOT has extra shimmer and sparkle. Both IEMs are excellent in detail retrieval and resolution, but the Volur's extra airiness gives it a wider soundstage. Imaging is excellent on both IEMs.
